AREAS OF EXPERTISE

CRESM is a non-profit social cooperative that promotes integrated and sustainable development initiatives and social inclusion in Sicily and the Mediterranean. CRESM is an independent organization free from political and religious influences. The projects developed by CRESM address issues related to seven interconnected work areas: Community Regeneration, Rural Development, Immigration and Inclusion, Youth, Social Mediation and Support to Victims, Professional Training, Services for Public Administrations.

COMMUNITY REGENERATION

Since the 1950s with the name of Centro Studi per la Piena Occupazione, then with the post-earthquake reconstruction plan for the Belìce Valley (1968) and for the earthquake that hit the Irpinia area (1980), CRESM has fostered through a participatory approach to the development and regeneration of communities, putting creativity and resilience of people to good use. The museum Belìce/Epicentro della Memoria Viva, founded by CRESM, unfolds the origins of our work with community engagement.

RURAL DEVELOPMENT

In Sicily the low employment rate and the lack of efficient public services pushes the population to abandon rural areas. CRESM works for positive change through innovative solutions, promoting ideas, networks and connections between different actors and areas in agriculture, environment and health.

IMMIGRATION AND INCLUSION

CRESM works with and among migrants in Palermo and in projects in Mediterranean countries. CRESM creates new spaces of inclusion where migrants and natives work together, communicate and share knowledge. CRESM’s field of action ranges from the reception of asylum seekers and refugees to social and work placement, research and training projects.

YOUTH

CRESM works with children and young people inside and outside schools to stimulate engagement with their communities and to learn a variety of responsible skills and behaviors. Within schools, CRESM promotes social interaction to prevent bullying or other types of violence.

MEDIATION AND SUPPORT

Conflicts and tensions can be solved by social mediation and restorative justice. CRESM has reached a high degree of experience in promoting social mediation, offering its skills and professionalism for adults and minors. The CRESM also deals with the professional training of social mediators and participates in the most important international networks on the subject. In addition, since 2013 CRESM have promoted various listening and psychological support spaces for victims of violence.

PROFESSIONAL TRAINING

CRESM has a great deal of experience in the training sector, particularly with regard to:

• local development agents closely related to Local Action Groups (LEADER Program);
• young agricultural entrepreneurs (management, administration, cultivation techniques).

CRESM work with classrooms and distance learning (FaD). We have also promoted a network of partner organizations, companies and institutions (from a local to international level) to improve the quality and effectiveness of our internships.
